BERMUDA 5 days

Bermuda, with the capital Hamilton, is a small North Atlantic island famous for pink-sand beaches like Elbow Beach and Horseshoe Bay. English is the main language; some speak Portuguese. The economy depends on tourism and international finance. The subtropical island faces severe storms but is partly shielded by a coral reef, reducing damage. Bermuda sees a damaging tropical cyclone about every six to seven years, mostly from early September to late October.

Whether by air or sea, this 5-day guide shows the island’s highlights.

    1. Why is Bermuda sand pink?

—Bermuda’s pink sand comes from a species of red foraminifera which is a marine organism growing on the coral reefs surrounding the island. The red foraminifera breaks off into the white sand because of fish feeding on the algae growing on the coral as well as with the power of the water moving around. This red/pink organism is what makes Bermuda’s sand pink.
